A Calm Crossing In Home Euthanasia helps you say a calm goodbye to your pet in the privacy and solace of your home. Our veterinarian will come to you to provide peaceful in home euthanasia and caring end of life services for your beloved companion. If you need assistance with aftercare, we can arrange for cremation services. We do not offer burial assistance. Our standard coverage area includes Pace, Milton, and most of the Pensacola, FL area. We can arrange to come to other extended areas as well, but this may incur additional travel fees. Please inquire at our Contact Us section below.
Please note that if you need immediate assistance or have a medical emergency with your pet, you need to call your regular veterinarian or a local emergency clinic. A Calm Crossing does not provide any services except in home euthanasia and aftercare, by appointment only.
Dr. Lindsey has worked as a general practice veterinarian for over 16 years and now offers this in-home service for pet owners facing this difficult time. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with having euthanasia performed at a veterinary facility, she believes being able to say goodbye at home can provide an additional level of comfort and closure for many people and even the remaining pet housemates.
We feel it is important to understand how a home visit for euthanasia is structured so you can decide if this is the right service for your family. This is a very detailed description of what to expect, so please be aware before proceeding that some may find it unsettling.
We recommend letting your pet stay in an area in your home where they can be comfortable and that allows you and the doctor to easily reach them, such as on the couch or a pet bed. If your dog or cat tends to be fractious or aggressive with people in your home, we may arrange for you to administer oral medications for anxiety and sedation to ease the process. After we arrive, we will finalize any paperwork and take payment for services if this has not already been done, so you do not have to worry about this after your pet has passed. A sedative will be administered orally or by injection, and within 10 to 20 minutes your pet will be in a pain free, deep state of sedation. The injection to perform euthanasia will then be administered, which will shut down their cardiac and respiratory functions. This is generally given intravenously (in a vein) which takes effect very quickly. On occasion, the injection has to be given by a different route due to the physical condition of the patient, and may then take a few minutes to take effect. This is still pain free and dignified, it just may take a little longer. The doctor will listen to the patient with a stethoscope to confirm that the heart has stopped beating and death has occurred. We will have discussed beforehand what to expect from this time in the process as the body shuts down. You will be given time to say a final goodbye, and ink and keepsake paw prints and ink nose prints can be made if you wish.
If you have elected to have us help with aftercare, at this point your pet's body will be prepared for transport. If your pet weighs more than 40lbs, someone will need to help the doctor carry the pet's body to the vehicle. If there is no one available that can help carry the pet, please let us know ahead of time so we can arrange for assistance. A Calm Crossing can handle cremation services for you using Pet Angel Memorial Center Crematory. The cremains can be returned to your regular veterinarian office, mailed to you, or hand delivered back to you for an additional fee if the other options are absolutely not feasible. If you elect to have communal cremation performed, this means there will not be anything returned to you and the disposition of the ashes will be handled by the crematory. Alternatively, you may wish to have the crematory of your choice come to your home for pickup, or you may want to take them to your regular vet for aftercare. You will have to make these arrangements.
A VERY IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT BURIAL AT HOME:
If you have chosen to bury the deceased pet, please note that you are responsible for ensuring this has been done in a legal and appropriate manner that does not pose a risk to wildlife or water sources. A Calm Crossing does not provide burial services and is not liable for any issues, legal or otherwise, that may arise as a result of inappropriate burial practices.
Our standard service area is within 15 mile radius of the Five Points area of Pace, FL. This includes Pace, Milton, and many areas of Pensacola. We can also come to Gulf Breeze, Pensacola Beach, etc but additional fees apply for locations outside the standard distance. We do not extend into Alabama. Dr. Lindsey reserves the right to decline service at any time for any reason.
Please send a message if you would like more information or to set up a house call for in home euthanasia. Please note we will make every effort to get back to you as quickly as possible, but it may be up to 24 hours, possibly longer if on a holiday or if demand is high. Please indicate if you prefer to be contacted by email, call, or text.
